Brighid & the Lepers

One of my favorite stories about Brighid — indeed, one of the most popular tales in general — is of two lepers who visited Her at Her well in Kildare. She told them to bathe one another in the waters until their skin was healed. When the first was healed, he became repulsed and would not touch the skin of the other to continue bathing him. Brighid was angered at his selfishness and caused the first man’s leprosy to return. She placed Her cloak over the second man, healing him instantly.

Of course the morals of this story are empathy, kindness and caring for others. But what stands out most to me is the message to remember your roots and never stop helping or empowering others who walk a path like one you’ve traveled; don’t get so used to your improved station, regardless of how hard you worked to achieve it, that you lose touch with your past struggles entirely. I’ve been in much worse situations than the one I’m in now and I still can’t always manage to help others in all of the ways that I’d like, but I do what I can to pay forward the help that I’ve received in the past.
